After acquiring the celebrated Black Star photography collection, the Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre - RIC) recently opened with electrical, mechanical, and lighting designed by Crossey Engineering and our affiliate, Consullux Lighting Consultants. Designed to hold multiple galleries, a vault, a research centre, and a learning space for students, the facility was once used as a brewery storage warehouse.
A striking, multi-panelled LED lighting system illuminates the building’s exterior, a design that required electrical engineers to ensure materials and cables remained invisible. Mechanically, the main gallery was designed with a completely independent HVAC system to protect the artifacts during emergencies. The systems all work together to achieve optimal efficiency, and sustain consistent lighting and airflow throughout each room.
