An advanced facility used by staff and students, the University of Waterloo’s Engineering 5 Building is a multi-purpose addition to one of Canada’s leading academic institutions. Approximately 150, 000 sq. ft., the six-storey building provides space for the university’s electrical, mechanical, computer, mechatronics, and system engineering departments.
Constructed around a central atrium, the building includes offices, support rooms, meeting rooms, classrooms, and student computer spaces. Workshops, hoist bays, a paint shop, and engine test cells are also specialized features of the building. A 2, 000 sq. ft. anechoic antenna test chamber was designed as a part of the electrical and computer engineering’s electromagnetic radiation laboratory.
Innovative and star-like LED lights illuminate the atrium ceiling, while an LED lit staircase shines as the building’s central feature. The ceramic frit pattern on the building’s glazed façade creates a bold three-dimensional design against which the many glass panels provide an outside glimpse of interior public activity and bold colour schemes.
