In 2008, Crossey Engineering Ltd. (CEL) recognized that the future of Mechanical and Electrical Consulting was migrating toward the use of the BIM construct, and the requirement for integrated 3D Mechanical and Electrical data-rich models were going to be the order of the day.

Recognizing that the out-of-the-box Revit MEP (Modeling) software wouldn't meet CEL's needs, we engaged several full-time software programmers to customize Revit MEP to meet CEL's engineering design requirements.

Here are just some examples of the customized features we've developed and incorporated into our project templates, which contribute to the best-in-class design services we offer to our clients.

• Single line drawings are dynamically linked to the floor plans in order to automatically update when changes are made to the floor plans.

• The Electrical model takes the electrical power requirements from the Mechanical model so that it is automatically updated as changes are made, and the distribution system is resized to suit.

• The information included in the mechanical schedules is uploaded into the system schematics. Therefore, if changes are made to the schedules the system schematics are automatically updated.

• We have significantly increased the number of available families in order to allow us to show all of the devices that we use on our projects.

• We reprogrammed Revit to follow the applicable Canadian Standards (US codes out of the box).

• We have interfaced Revit with our Energy and Lighting Load Calculation programs.

· We can personalize to include owners' equipment and services.

• We have developed a customized layering system to allow our systems to be easier to understand by other consultants.

• We have enhanced Electrical and Mechanical coordination through the Revit database.

• The functionality of Revit drawings techniques has been enhanced to make drawing more efficient.

• CEL Revit allows designers to see clashes as they occur during the design process to avoid weekly clash reports and the remedial work that results.
